DASK (compulsory earthquake insurance)
Also known as: earthquake insurance, compulsory earthquake insurance, deprem sigortası
Definition
Compulsory insurance in Turkey covering material damage to homes caused by earthquakes and the resulting fire, explosion and landslide, up to a coverage limit.
Compulsory earthquake insurance is run by the Natural Disaster Insurance Institution (DASK) under Law No. 6305 on Disaster Insurance. It is compulsory for independent units used as residences, and a separate policy is issued for each independent unit.
The premium is calculated based on the construction type, the risk zone where the building is located and the gross square meters. Coverage is capped at an upper limit; optional home insurance can be taken out for contents and for damage exceeding the limit.
A valid DASK policy is required for land registry transactions and for subscriptions such as electricity and water.
